Argus was a monster with many eyes, used as a guard by the gods. Hera, the wife of Zeus, asked Argus to watch lo, Zeus’ mistress. Zeus then sent Hermes to dispatch Argus. As a tribute, Hera placed his many eyes into the tail of a peacock, her favorite bird. © The Argillet Collection.
