A sailor on shore leave must visit the tattoo shop in the Bowery to have the tattoo of his lady love’s name to carry with him on his extended tour of duty in the Navy. “Betty” joins the long list of names of his previous lady loves, which have all been crossed off. Sadie, Rosietta, Ming Fu, Mimi, Olga, and Sing Lee are not just his old flames but also the permanent reminders of his adventures and experiences with the Navy. Norman Rockwell’s 219th cover for the Saturday Evening Post was published on March 4th, 1944, with a tongue-in-cheek portrayal of one of the brave servicemen as he visits the tattoo parlor to fill in what little space he has left on his arm with a new name.
