“I draw my past through the eyes of a child through the young man I was When ships and steel were a part of my town and men were like giants building our grand ships of the sea.

When I draw, influences from the past spring into my head. The Shipyard is one of those pieces where I am revisiting my past; I think to bring it into the present. The shipyards from my childhood are long gone, but their presence in my town was strong, and those memories remain. I remember being not long out of school and starting work; I couldn’t believe how huge those ships were, like towering monoliths dwarfing the people on the ground. You could only ever stand in the shadows of these enormous feats of engineering, and then, as now, I marvel at the industry and community of people who worked to build these beautiful vessels.

This image is my way of paying homage to those wonderful days, which were packed with wonderful people and alive with colour and energy.” —  Mackenzie Thorpe
