Hart’s sculptures are powerful and moving works of art that have touched the lives of millions of people. He was a master sculptor who left an indelible mark on the world of art.
“The Cross of the Millennium” was a thoughtful and dynamic work that Frederick Hart developed over several years to celebrate the 2000th birthday of Jesus Christ. The piece embraces the use of light in the same way medieval artists employed stained glass to create a powerful spiritual presence within a space. Hart intricately designed the piece to represent Christ’s life, with the Star of Bethlehem representing the birth, the crucifixion viewed from the front, and the capturing of the mysterious resurrection seen from the back.
In doing so, Hart can convey the idea of physical and spiritual transcendence. Hart went on to present the life-size sculpture to Pope John Paul II, who declared the piece “a profound theological statement for our day.” ©Frederick Hart.
