Donald Sultan’s Fruit, Flower, and Fish series is a group of paintings and prints that were created between 1988 and 1991. Bold colors and semi-abstract style characterize the series. The paintings in the series depict everyday objects such as fruits, flowers, and fish. However, Sultan’s paintings are not simply realistic depictions of these objects. Instead, he uses a variety of techniques to transform them into something more abstract and evocative.

In the original of  “Pears,” Sultan used a thick layer of tar to create a glossy, almost otherworldly surface. The pears themselves are rendered in a simplified, geometric style. The result is a painting that is both visually striking and emotionally resonant.
