Donald Sultan’s Poppies series is a meditation on the beauty and fragility of life. The paintings depict large-scale, close-up views of poppies, often in a state of decay. The use of bold colors and simple forms creates a sense of immediacy and energy in the paintings. The flat, two-dimensional style of the paintings also creates a sense of detachment from the natural world. This detachment allows the viewer to contemplate the beauty of the natural world without being overwhelmed by its fragility.
The poppies themselves are a symbol of beauty and death. The bright red petals of the poppy are often associated with blood, while the black center of the flower is associated with death. The juxtaposition of these two colors creates a sense of tension and ambiguity in the paintings. This tension can be seen as a reflection of the tension between life and death, beauty and decay.
