Andy Warhol’s “Mammy,” from the 1981 “Myths” portfolio, is a complex and controversial artwork that has sparked diverse interpretations and discussions. The artwork depicts a caricature of the “mammy,” a stereotypical Black female servant figure common in antebellum Southern culture and perpetuated in minstrel shows and Hollywood films. The figure is shown wearing a headscarf with exaggerated facial features.
